Nicolas Brault, a captain in the second Foreign Engineer Regiment, has published 'Donner l’ordre ne suffit pas' with Michel Lafon on the art of command. According to L'Équipe, he met in Paris to compare military leadership with sport.

Brault previously led a mountain commando group, specialised in contact operations and intelligence in extreme environments.

He says he was not the best marksman or urban fighter, and that his men surpassed him in their specialities.

For him, commanding is a different craft, the ability to knit together personalities and egos.

He argues it is not about a square jaw or snapping orders, but about serving those under his command.
