Luís Mendes, the former Benfica SAD administrator and vice-president, has explained his June 2024 exit, saying it was solely due to strategic and governance differences. The ex-director, who has recently criticised the president, rejected any link to Rui Costa’s alleged debt and said he wanted to set the record straight.
Sábado reports that the alleged debt concerned a Carnaxide real estate project, with Mendes pursuing legal action to recover about 500 thousand euros. That amount was later settled by Rui Costa.
Setting out his disagreements, Mendes cited worries over a worsening financial balance and the club’s sporting policy. He framed his departure as an internal matter.
He voiced displeasure that the issue had gained prominence during a particularly important period for Benfica. Mendes urged responsibility and complete focus on the club’s best interests.
A company linked to the Benfica president said claims of financial difficulties were entirely false, explaining there had only been a delay to the project due to operational constraints. It added that the commitments were strictly personal and had no impact on the club.
