Luke O’Nien has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Sport by the University of Sunderland, recognising his impact on and off the pitch.
According to Sunderland Echo, the man widely known as 'Mr Sunderland' will be presented with the honour during July 2026 graduation ceremonies at The Fire Station in the city centre.
O’Nien joined from Wycombe Wanderers for the start of the 2018 season after relegation to League One. After an early battle for minutes, he became captain and played a pivotal role in the revival that returned the club to the Premier League.
He also played a key part on the final day last season, helping to create the opener against Chelsea that sealed a Europa League place.
O’Nien has now made over 300 appearances and tops Sunderland’s list for outings at the Stadium of Light.
He said he was unbelievably honoured, thanked the city for the opportunity it gave him, spoke of developing as a player and father, and said he will do his best to keep contributing to the community.
Reflecting on human connection, he noted that everyone carries unseen challenges and that sometimes listening without judgement is best, because feeling seen and supported can spark remarkable things.
Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell said O’Nien embodies Sunderland’s spirit, praising his talent, hard work, resilience, community focus and positivity, and described the recognition as highly appropriate.
