The Hatters have tabled a third bid for the striker, as they look to move out of the relegation zone.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Luton Town's season has been dismal, and despite Matt Bloomfield's arrival at Kenilworth Road, the threat of relegation is looming strongly overhead.
The Hatters are currently 23rd in the Championship table after picking up just one point in their last seven league games, and they are now three points from safety.
Rob Edwards left the club at the start of January, however, the Bedfordshire outfit have not shown great improvements since, and they are in serious danger of suffering back-to-back relegations after dropping out of the Premier League after just one season in 2023/24.
Therefore, it will not come as a surprise to supporters to see Luton submit a third bid for Wycombe Wanderers' Richard Kone, with reports stating that the second tier side have offered £6m.
Football League World exclusively revealed on Monday that the Hatters had tabled a third bid for the striker before the news emerged of the bumper figure that has been put on the table, with Bloomfield looking to reunite with the 21-year-old.
The Ivorian has been in excellent form for the Chairboys this season, scoring 16 goals in 28 League One appearances, and he has played a huge role in putting his side into contention for promotion back to the Championship.
FLW asked their Luton Fan Pundit, Simon Mills, if he believes his team would be overpaying for Kone if the deal is agreed.
"When you get to this stage of the January transfer window and teams know you need reinforcements, you're going to be paying a premium on whatever that is," he started.
"Personally, I think the £6m figure that has been reported is probably something like £4m up front with add-ons that could rise eventually to £6m.
"We need new players through the door and to get that you've got to pay for them. I think that it is worth the risk."
Simon continued: "I think it will bring some freshness to the attack, and as Kone has worked with Bloomfield he knows how to get the best out of him.
"I think it's a deal we have to get over the line."
Paying £6m for a player who has only played in the EFL for a year is no doubt a risk, but at 21, he will only develop over time, and he has the potential to become a very good Championship-level striker.
Luton have good forwards, and Carlton Morris does have the ability to fire the team out of danger once he hits form, but the striking department could do with more competition. Bringing in Kone, who is hungry for goals constantly could help burst the rest of the team into life.
Relegation to League One would be disastrous for the Hatters, especially after they were playing in the Premier League just last season, and it is clear that they are doing everything in their power to remain in the second tier.
Bloomfield will know the best way to utilise Kone, and this will only help Luton as they battle against the drop.
Added onto the fact that Luton are receiving parachute payments and they haven't really splashed the cash on new signings this season, they can afford to take at least one risk at this stage - and Bloomfield clearly knows how to get the best out of the mercurial striker.
