Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not return to Sunderland this season, describing his loan spell as one he will always be proud of. The player said in a post that he was grateful for the opportunity and wished the club well.

Sunderland chose not to activate their option to buy earlier this summer. Talks continued with the RB Leipzig loanee, but the club ultimately signed free agent Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal.

He thanked team-mates, staff and supporters for their backing throughout the campaign.

Geertruida made 30 appearances in all competitions last season. Although he was not always a regular starter, he contributed to the strong finish that secured Europa League football next term.

The defender departs after a season-long loan in which he made his Premier League debut for the club.
