Madureira stumble, Flamengo could overtake in Carioca Group B | OneFootball

Madureira missed the chance to seal qualification on Monday 26, and can now be caught by Flamengo in Carioca Group B.

Portuguesa beat Madureira 2-0 in the fourth round, Rhuan and Chay scoring. According to Coluna Do Fla, only an unlikely combination would spare Flamengo the relegation quadrangular, although early results are helping.

The standings now read: Botafogo nine points from four matches. Madureira and Boavista six from four. Nova Iguaçu four from three, Flamengo four from five, and Maricá three from three.

Flamengo could overhaul Madureira if they beat Sampaio Corrêa in the final round, while Madureira would need to lose to Vasco and Volta Redonda.

They also require slips from Boavista, Nova Iguaçu and Maricá, at least two of the four sides mentioned. Nova Iguaçu face Volta Redonda on Monday 26, and Maricá play Sampaio on Tuesday 27.

Avoiding the relegation quadrangular matters. Beyond the risk of dropping to the second tier, it would crowd Flamengo’s calendar, as the title route involves four knockout games, whereas the survival mini-league would add six more fixtures.
