Maicosuel explains why he rejected Flamengo move while at Atlético-MG | OneFootball

Former midfielder Maicosuel has revealed he turned down a Flamengo offer while at Atlético-MG, saying his bond with Botafogo was decisive.

Speaking to Charla Podcast, Maicosuel said: “My agent arrived in Belo Horizonte and told me Flamengo were going to sign me, and I said no. At the time I told him I wanted to stay at Atlético, I liked the city. I was not playing, but I proved I could and I had a good year. I like these challenges.”

He added: “What weighed on me was the identification with Botafogo. Nowadays, who would not want to play for Flamengo? It is a very heavy shirt, a strong fanbase, but my love is all for Botafogo. I love that club.”

Maicosuel is regarded as an idol by Botafogo supporters. In a Carioca final against Flamengo, he tried to dribble past Juan, who took exception and confronted him, and Flamengo went on to lift the state trophy.

As Maicosuel looks back, Flamengo focus on what comes next. On Saturday 11, they face Fluminense in the Brasileirão at the Maracanã, with kick-off at 18:30 Brasília time.
