Chelsea expect to be seriously challenging for the Premier League within three seasons, if not sooner according to reports.

The Blues announced Xabi Alonso as their new manager on Sunday morning, with the Spaniard signing a four year deal at Stamford Bridge.

In a change from Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, Alonso has been given the title of manager, which indicates he will have more of a say.

Chelsea expect to be challenging for the league within three years

The appointment of Alonso is seen as a real coup for Chelsea, and potentially shows they have acknowledged and learnt from previous mistakes.

Alonso’s appointment is believed to have gone down well with the players, but now the hard work begins following another disappointing season.

The Blues lost Saturday’s FA Cup final to Manchester City and sit ninth in the league with just two games remaining.

It’s unlikely Chelsea will be playing European football next season, but Alonso will be tasked with getting the Blues back to the top end of the table.

Mail Sport have reported the initial idea according to one insider is Chelsea are seriously challenging for the Premier League title within three seasons or sooner.

Alonso certainly has the credentials to do that, but a lot of whether that’s possible will depend on Chelsea’s recruitment significantly improving.
