Fresh off his rookie season, Toronto FC midfielder Malik Henry discusses his wild journey to becoming a pro and creating beats for artists like Lil Tjay and Hotboii on the latest episode of the Urban Pitch Podcast.
If there is a “typical” route to pro soccer, Malik Henry definitely didn’t follow it. Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, he found his way to the Toronto FC academy as a youth player, and then chose the college route with the University of North Carolina before transferring to the University of Akron.
Henry was drafted by CF Montreal following his junior year at Akron, but instead decided to return for his senior year of college, where he blossomed into one of the top players in the country. With Montreal still retaining his rights from the draft, he joined the club going into the 2025 preseason, but didn’t make the final roster. Toronto FC soon came calling, and Henry was now back with his childhood club.
After starting with Toronto FC II in MLS Next Pro, Henry earned a few call-ups to the first team, and fully signed with the MLS side in August 2025.
He joins the latest episode of the Urban Pitch Podcast to recount his wild rookie season, in addition to his career off the pitch: making beats.
