Man arrested over alleged racist abuse at Tyne-Wear derby

A man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after alleged racist abuse during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park on 22 March. According to Sunderland Echo, he was detained on 31 March and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
The arrest was confirmed on 1 April. The suspect is 45 and from the Gateshead area.
The match, which Sunderland won 1-2, was briefly halted by the referee.
Sunderland full-back Lutsharel Geertruida reported alleged racist abuse from the stands during the game.
Enquiries are continuing.
