Omar Marmoush played a significant attacking role as Egypt recorded a crucial victory on Sunday evening against New Zealand.

Egypt created history in the World Cup by coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1, securing both their first-ever tournament victory and an unprecedented spot in the last 32.

The All Whites dared to dream of their own maiden tournament win when Finn Surman rose highest in the 15th minute to head home a perfectly placed corner from Tim Payne. However, just as they had done by squandering advantages in their draw with Iran, the Kiwis collapsed under pressure in the second half, allowing the Pharaohs to take complete control of Group G.

The tactical transformations introduced by manager Hossam Hassan flipped the script, sparking a blitz of three Egyptian goals in the span of just 24 second-half minutes. Mostafa Zico initiated the fightback in the 58th minute, nodding home a precise cross from Mohamed Hany.

Mohamed Salah then took centre stage to completely dismantle the New Zealand defence, playing a slick, intricate one-two with Zico inside the penalty area before coolly slotting a low finish into the bottom corner to put the Africans ahead for the first time.

The former Liverpool talisman turned provider in the 82nd minute, delivering a pinpoint corner for substitute Trezeguet to head home and seal the historic result.

The momentous victory – arriving in Egypt’s fourth-ever World Cup appearance since their debut back in 1934 – means Hassan’s side can officially win the group if they defeat Iran this coming Saturday.

Conversely, a dejected New Zealand outfit remains winless on the global stage and must pull off a massive upset against Belgium in their final group fixture to have any hope of progressing.
