Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side left London with frustration after their latest league outing, yet there were positives to note. The return of Rodri, who completed ninety minutes despite midweek concerns over his knee, and John Stones, who featured in the closing stages following his muscle layoff, provided encouragement. However, as ever with an intense calendar, attention quickly shifts to the fitness of those still on the sidelines.
Egypt international Omar Marmoush endured a cruel setback while on international duty earlier this month. Only minutes into Egypt’s stalemate against Burkina Faso, the winger suffered a knee ligament injury. Images afterwards showed him wearing a brace and using crutches, a concerning sight for Manchester City fans eager to see more of his direct attacking play.
Guardiola has since reassured reporters that Marmoush is making steady progress. “A few weeks, I think, before the next international break he will be ready,” said the City manager ahead of the derby. Should recovery remain on track, Marmoush could return on 5 October against Brentford away, offering a valuable option in wide areas.

Summer signing Rayan Cherki made an instant impact when he scored on his Premier League debut, but his momentum was quickly halted. A thigh injury forced him out, with Guardiola clarifying in August: “He’s out for two months. Seven or eight weeks.”
The Frenchman has been working towards fitness, though the expected timeline means supporters may have to wait until 1 November, at home to Bournemouth, before seeing him again in a Manchester City shirt. For a creative player brought in to offer flair between midfield and attack, his return could be vital during a demanding winter period.
Young defender Nico O’Reilly impressed once more against Arsenal, showing composure beyond his years. Unfortunately, his afternoon ended prematurely as he limped off after a heavy challenge. There was no official update from Guardiola post-match, but initial signs suggested the issue was not serious.
A return as early as 24 September away to Huddersfield has been mentioned, although the club will monitor his condition closely. The academy graduate’s progress is one of the bright stories of City’s season, and his availability adds depth in a stretched defensive unit.
Another summer addition, Rayan Ait-Nouri, also encountered problems during the international break. Details remain scarce regarding his injury and no specific return date has been communicated. Patience will be required as City assess his rehabilitation.
Midfielder Mateo Kovacic has been absent since undergoing Achilles surgery prior to the Club World Cup. Guardiola previously stated, “We have three [defensive midfielders], I would say, with Kova injured until September or October, hopefully earlier.” The Croatian’s experience and versatility remain important for the months ahead, and October continues to look realistic for his comeback.
