Manchester City are considering legal action after Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme used Erling Haaland’s name and image as part of his election campaign ahead of this weekend’s vote.
Riquelme, who is challenging long-serving president Florentino Perez, caused a stir during a television appearance when he unveiled a Real Madrid shirt bearing Haaland’s name and claimed the Norwegian striker would join the Spanish giants if he won the election. He also suggested that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was a key transfer target.
The remarks were quickly dismissed by both Manchester City and Haaland’s representatives. City released a strongly worded statement denying the claims and insisting there is no release clause in Haaland’s contract that would make such a move possible. The Premier League club also confirmed it is exploring legal options regarding the use of the player’s image in a political-style campaign.
Haaland’s father, Alfie Haaland, and agent Rafaela Pimenta also rejected the suggestion, describing it as entertaining but entirely untrue
The controversy comes just days before Real Madrid members vote in the club’s presidential election. Riquelme has built his campaign around ambitious promises, including major signings and fan-focused initiatives, while Perez remains the favourite to retain his position
For Manchester City, however, the focus is on protecting one of their most valuable assets, with Haaland under contract until 2034 and showing no signs of leaving the Etihad Stadium anytime soon.
