Manchester City will be hoping to bolster their Premier League title chances when they host Chelsea on Sunday at 5:30pm.
Pep Guardiola’s side dropped points against Sunderland in midweek to sit four points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Man City (4-3-2-1): Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol; Silva, Gonzalez, Foden; Cherki, Doku; Haaland.
A game against Chelsea has come at the right time. Man City are unbeaten in their past eight Premier League games against the Blues, winning six. It’s their joint-longest run without defeat against Chelsea in their league history.
Thursday’s draw with Sunderland was disappointing in more ways than one. Man City lost Savinho to injury and Guardiola has admitted that it “does not look good”. Jeremy Doku came on to replace Savinho and he’s likely to start at the Etihad this weekend.
Nico Gonzalez also came off with a knock at half-time, but he looks fine to play at the weekend. Guardiola is likely to continue with the midfielder, so as not to rush Rodri back to starting so soon after his return from injury.
Nico O’Reilly is another to have suffered a bit of a knock, and he faces a late fitness test to see if he can play. As such, Guardiola may opt to start Josko Gvardiol ahead of O’Reilly at left-back.
Otherwise, Guardiola is likely to start most of the players that kicked off at the Stadium of Light. That means Erling Haaland leads the line, with Rayan Cherki joining Doku behind him. Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva will form part of the midfield, either side of Gonzalez.
Matheus Nunes remains the only choice at right-back, with Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias the centre-back options. Gianluigi Donnarumma will start in goal.
The Citizens remain without Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Noiri who are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. Oscar Bobb, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic are injured.
Erling Haaland has loved playing at the Etihad this season. The Norwegian has scored 11 goals in his eight Premier League home games this season. His home record alone would be enough to see Haaland joint-top scorer of the Premier League, alongside Igor Thiago.
More impressively, Haaland has scored five home braces this season. The last player to score at least two goals in more different home games in a single season was Haaland himself, in 2022-23. And even then he only managed it six times.
There’s a chance Haaland could make it six this weekend. Haaland has four goals in six league games against Chelsea, and netted in each of his two appearances vs the Blues last season. Haaland has, however, failed to score in his past two league appearances. He hasn’t failed to score in three successive Premier League games since December 2024.
