Remember me, boss? Foden reminds Pep of his magic as Man City breeze past Crystal Palace

Whatever the lyrics of the song devoted to him, Phil Foden has not been on fire. But as he rediscovered his spark in the Mancunian rain, Pep Guardiola’s gamble paid off. Manchester City retained their interest in the title race and head to the FA Cup final with fresher legs after Guardiola rested, rotated and recorded a comfortable win.

It is a sign of how Foden’s star has waned that he figured in the weakened team. Footballer of the Year in 2024, he is Rayan Cherki’s understudy in 2026. He still has not scored in the calendar year, but when City looked stifled by Crystal Palace’s obduracy, he conjured a gorgeous assist.

When could Arsenal win the Premier League? Remaining title race fixtures compared to Man City

Manchester City have closed the gap to two points after their win against Crystal Palace on Wednesday - but the Premier League title remains in Arsenal’s hands.

First-half goals from Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush, plus a second-half strike from Savinho, earned Pep Guardiola’s much-changed side victory at the Etihad on Wednesday, putting them two behind with two to play.

Arsenal’s next match is at home to Burnley on Monday, while City take on Bournemouth away next Tuesday after their FA Cup final match-up against Chelsea on Saturday.

Phil Foden shines as Man City keep pressure on Arsenal with Crystal Palace win

Phil Foden shone as Manchester City moved back within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal with a comfortable 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush both struck from Foden passes in the first half before Savinho added a late third as City kept their slender title hopes alive at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

With both title challengers having two games remaining, City do still have a chance of securing a seventh league crown in nine years.

How can Man City take it down to the wire?

If they beat Bournemouth in their next game, Manchester City would be able to take the title race to the final day of the season, where Arsenal are away at Crystal Palace and Guardiola’s side host Aston Villa.

Yet Arsenal dropping points would also mean City have the title in their hands again. If Arsenal drew to Burnley and City beat Bournemouth, the teams would be level on points heading into the final day and it would come down to goal difference, currently one in the Citizens’ favour.

However, the Gunners finish their season at a Palace team who will be preparing for a European final a few days later. City, similarly, will take on a Villa side who will have played a European final four days earlier.

When could Arsenal win the Premier League?

City’s win against Palace now means Arsenal cannot win the title at home to Burnley on Monday.

However, should the Gunners claim three points and City slip up at Bournemouth on Tuesday, Arteta’s side would win the title away from the pitch with a game to spare.

If Arsenal and City both win or match each other’s results, it would go down to the final day.

Pep on FA Cup final

”All we can do is go to sleep as quickly as possible and prepare for the FA Cup. That is what we have to do,” said Pep Guardiola when asked about the FA Cup final this evening.

“The FA Cup, incredible respect. We lost the last two times because we were not good enough. We are going to go there to win.

“We have to be ready physically and mentally against a team who are not in the best season, but the quality is there. Of course, they will do their best, and we have to do our best to try to win,” he added.

More from Guardiola

“We had to work, but Palace worked harder. We were better. A tough team to break down because they defended incredibly well,” says Pep Guardiola on BBC.

“These type of games, they play the low block - it is the talent for the wingers, like Phil in the first goal. These types of games, the quality makes the difference. And Phil is full of it in his body. I am beyond happy and satisfied.

“Phil, we know his qualities. I appreciate him a lot. Incredible runner and fighter. In the final third, an incredible spark. I was really pleased with that.

"Rayan [Cherki] has incredible quality coming from the bench and making an impact. Kovacic and him make an impact."

On the title race, he adds: "Depends on them [Arsenal]. If they win two games - nothing to do, nothing to talk. All we can be is in there just in case. The last two games are tough."
