Manchester United have officially begun their summer rebuilding process by confirming the exits of three senior players just moments after their final game of a turbulent campaign.
The announcement came in the aftermath of a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, a result that brought little consolation following one of the club’s most disappointing seasons in recent history.
Despite the win, aided by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez being shown a red card for a last-man foul on Rasmus Hojlund, United’s performance over the season has been widely criticised, culminating in a mid-table finish and no European football secured for the upcoming campaign.
Second-half goals from Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen ensured the season closed on a rare positive note, but the post-match headlines quickly shifted to news off the pitch.
Shortly after the final whistle, United confirmed that Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, and Jonny Evans would all leave the club at the end of the season on the club’s website.

Eriksen, 33, departs after joining from Brentford on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Known for his composure and creativity in midfield, he made 107 appearances during his time at Old Trafford and was part of the side that won the EFL Cup in 2023.
Victor Lindelöf, one of the club’s longest-serving defenders, ends a seven-year stay in Manchester. Signed from Benfica in 2017, the Swedish international featured in over 250 matches and was a regular fixture across multiple managerial regimes.
Meanwhile, Jonny Evans’ brief return to Man United has also come to an end. The Northern Irish defender, who initially played for the club from 2006 to 2015, rejoined in 2023 to provide experienced cover in defence during an injury-hit campaign.
With manager Ruben Amorim expected to oversee significant changes this summer, the departure of these three veterans marks the first step in what is anticipated to be a major squad overhaul at Old Trafford.
