Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana returned to the Old Trafford club this summer wanting a new contract, a stance that did not go down well with head coach Ruben Amorim, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils star has been of that view since receiving the standard 25 per cent cut for non-qualification to the Champions League, but he has since lost his spot in the starting XI.

Man United started the Premier League campaign with Altay Bayindir in goal, but they have signed Belgian goalie Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp – a decision led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The Old Trafford club initially had no plans to sign a goalkeeper this summer, but Onana resuming pre-season with a hamstring injury changed things.

Bayindir was unconvincing against Arsenal in the first game of 2025-26, and the club had decided they needed an upgrade in the position by the time Onana put in a poor performance against Grimsby Town.

The Turkey international did not cover himself in glory in the 3-2 win over Burnley at the weekend, and Man United will not go anywhere with error-prone goalies.

Lammens is not expected to walk straight into the starting XI, with Onana still backing himself to reclaim his starting place, but the 23-year-old is widely seen as an upgrade on the current options available at the Theatre of Dreams.

Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez was also an option had a move for Lammens fallen through, with Amorim focusing on signing the Argentine back in July.

However, the finances involved made a deal tricky as Martinez earns more than Onana, while Villa would have demanded a transfer fee in excess of £30m.

Man United made no efforts to sell Onana, and while Monaco registered a real interest in him, they declined to advance in talks after they were informed his price was a minimum £30m.

Onana’s representatives again checked if the Red Devils wished for them to seek exit options after the Fulham game, but they were told not to, and that the player remains a part of Amorim’s plans.
