Manchester United are stepping up efforts to secure a long-term solution between the posts, with Diogo Costa emerging as the first-choice target to replace André Onana. According to CM Jornal, the club have already deployed scouts to monitor the FC Porto goalkeeper in action, specifically during their recent match against Famalicão at the Estádio do Dragão.

Costa, a Portuguese international, is being closely followed by both Manchester clubs, but United are currently ahead in groundwork. It signals that manager Rúben Amorim is planning a potential overhaul in goal following inconsistency from Onana.
One of Costa’s biggest assets is his reliability. Across the last four seasons, he has made more than 40 appearances each year. This season alone, he has already played 41 games, totalling 3,720 minutes. As CM Jornal noted, “The consistency shown by Diogo Costa is a decisive asset. He has very few injuries.”
With such a record, it’s no surprise that both Man Utd and Man City are monitoring his availability closely.
While Manchester City are also interested—reportedly preparing a €58 million (£50m) bid—Costa’s €75 million (£64m) release clause remains a sticking point. As CM Jornal explains, “Manchester City are preparing an offer of €58 million due to Ederson’s ongoing injuries.” However, that remains below Porto’s valuation.

Porto president André Villas-Boas is aware of the growing interest and knows competition between both Manchester clubs could raise Costa’s value. As CM puts it, “Villas-Boas is rubbing his hands with satisfaction, knowing that a bidding war could inflate the player’s price.”
Despite interest mounting, Porto are unlikely to sanction any move before this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Villas-Boas reportedly believes it will serve as a “showcase” for players like Costa, with Porto set to face Palmeiras (15 June), Inter Miami (19 June), and Al-Ahly (24 June).
CM Jornal reports, “Villas-Boas is open to selling the keeper, but only for a figure close to the release clause, and only after Porto participate in the Club World Cup.”
For Manchester United fans, this is a rumour that stirs real excitement. Diogo Costa represents not just an upgrade in goal, but a reassertion of standards. In a post-De Gea era still searching for stability, Costa would bring calmness, authority, and elite-level shot-stopping—all wrapped in a player just entering his prime.
Supporters will also relish the idea of beating Man City to a major signing. After seasons of City winning the market battles, this could signal a change in momentum, especially under a forward-thinking coach like Rúben Amorim. Costa’s experience in European competition and impressive international credentials make him ideal for United’s ambitions, especially if Champions League qualification is secured.
More importantly, fans know that £64 million for a proven, durable goalkeeper isn’t a gamble—it’s a necessity. The message from supporters is clear: bring him in, and let’s build from the back.
