Manchester United legend Roy Keane did not hold back after Real Madrid fell to a 1-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

While the result itself leaves the tie finely balanced, much of the post-match discussion has centred on defensive lapses, and one player, in particular, found himself under heavy scrutiny.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was singled out following his role in allowing Luis Diaz to score, a moment that proved decisive in the overall outcome.

Despite Real Madrid showing attacking promise, especially with Kylian Mbappe pulling a goal back, the defensive fragility ultimately cost them.

Speaking on CBS (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Keane delivered a scathing assessment, expressing frustration over what he sees as a recurring issue in big matches.

He explained the most common stories surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s attacking qualities, including his assist for Madrid’s goal.

“Listen, I’ve had enough. It’s the same story in every big game.

“People keep talking about how well he passes the ball, but what about the basics?

“Defending. At this level, in the Champions League, you can’t switch off like that,” he said.

The former Manchester United captain then sharpened his critique, focusing specifically on the moment that led to Diaz’s goal.

In his view, the error was not just technical, but fundamental, something that should not happen at this level of football.

“It’s a childish mistake. Letting Luis Diaz get past you as if you weren’t even there? Please. He keeps defending as if he’d never played right-back in his life.

“Big games demand great defenders, and right now, he’s a long way from being one,” he added.
