Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements could lead them toward an emerging talent with a familiar connection to the club’s interim leadership. As preparations quietly begin for the summer transfer window, Man United have been linked with Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, a player who continues to attract attention for his maturity and technical quality.
With Casemiro expected to depart when his contract expires, the Old Trafford hierarchy are preparing for change in the centre of the pitch. Recruitment plans suggest the club could pursue more than one midfielder, balancing a marquee signing with a younger option who can strengthen depth across a demanding Premier League season.
Hayden Hackney has built a strong reputation in the Championship with Middlesbrough. At 23, the midfielder has combined composure in possession with the work rate required in English football’s most relentless division. His performances have helped keep Middlesbrough firmly in the promotion race, sitting second in the table with ten games remaining.
Interest from Man United has been discussed alongside links to other midfielders including Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali. These names represent significant financial investment, which may lead United to pursue a more economical addition to complement a headline arrival.
Talksport reporter Alex Crook recently highlighted Hackney as a realistic option for the club’s midfield plans.

He said: “A couple of other names that have been mentioned to me in the last couple of days – Mateus Fernandes at West Ham, he’s starting to play really well for them and a cheaper option potentially, if you’re just looking for extra numbers in midfield is Hayden Hackney at Middlesbrough – someone who’s played under Michael Carrick, someone a lot of Premier League have looked at.
“So it wouldn’t surprise me if they signed one of those big guns, the likes of Baleba, Wharton, Anderson, Tonali, and then bring in a Hayden Hackney or Mateus Fernandes to supplement that because I’m just not convinced they can spend the level of money to buy Baleba and Wharton say.”
Hackney’s development under Michael Carrick adds an intriguing layer to the transfer conversation around Man United. Carrick coached the midfielder during his time managing Middlesbrough and has previously spoken warmly about his character and progress.
Speaking in 2024, Carrick said: “He’s been exemplary really since I’ve been here and I really enjoy working with him. He’s desperate for more, desperate to learn, and he’s a real credit to his family, to himself and to the club.
“He’s grounded, he’s humble, he’s down to earth and loves to learn. He loves the place and he loves the club as well.
“To have that, added with the talent he has got, it’s the perfect scenario. I think it just shows his consistency really, over a long period of time. It’s not easy when you’re a younger player, but he’s certainly done that.”
