Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Mike Maignan as the Red Devils plot to plug the gaping hole between the sticks (h/t talkSPORT).
Man United want to complete their goalkeeper reshuffle by bringing the Frenchman to Old Trafford and are ready to rival Chelsea for his signature.
The Red Devils have already signed Senne Lammens for £18.2 million, but apparently, manager Ruben Amorim is pushing for a ‘more experienced number one’.
Lammens is yet to feature for Man United, with Altay Bayindir claiming the starting berth upon the departure of Andre Onana.
Maignan has been a stalwart for AC Milan, helping the club win the Serie A and Super Cup titles.
Lauded by former boss Stefano Pioli as ‘a champion in everything’, he was also a key part of the Lille squad that toppled Paris Saint-Germain to win the Ligue 1 title.
The Manchester United target was a World Cup finalist with France in 2022, bringing a wealth of experience to the position.
He appeals to the Red Devils because he is in the final year of his contract with Milan.
But Maignan is not the answer to United’s long-term needs. First, his injury record is worrying.
He has already missed big chunks of multiple seasons and is once again sidelined, which should serve as a red flag for a club trying to rebuild.
Investing in a player who cannot stay consistently fit would only compound United’s goalkeeping instability.
Secondly, the 30-year-old is past his peak. His reflexes have slowed, his command of the box is less assured, and the decline has been evident over the past two campaigns.
United do not need another stopgap. They need a foundation for the future. Trusting Lammens makes far more sense.
At just 23, he is raw but brimming with talent, with the potential to develop into one of Europe’s best.
Instead of chasing faded names, United should back their young signing and build forward.
