Manchester United have told Luke Shaw to accept a pay cut before negotiations over a new contract can begin, according to The Sun.

The 30-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, and United are open to keeping him beyond next summer but only under strict conditions.

Shaw is still a key player for the club, but United will only open talks over a new deal if he’s ready to reduce his current £200,000-per-week salary.

United are reviewing their wage structure and long-term plans, so they’re highly unlikely to retain Shaw’s services if he refuses to compromise.

The ‘world-class‘ defender enjoyed one of the most consistent seasons of his career last term, becoming only the fifth United player to start all 38 games of a single campaign in the Premier League era.

It’s also the first time he has gone through a full campaign unscathed since joining United over a decade ago, which is a remarkable achievement considering how much he has struggled with injuries.

Shaw has become United’s longest-serving player, making 325 appearances for the Red Devils across 12 seasons, while contributing five goals and 30 assists.

He has consistently battled with injuries over the years, failing to reach the 20-game mark in six different seasons. He has now finally found some semblance of stability.

United’s decision on Shaw is similar to the approach they took with Harry Maguire earlier in the year.

Maguire agreed to a deal that reduced his guaranteed salary but included performance-related incentives and bonuses, allowing him to potentially earn more if certain targets were met.

A similar structure could provide a solution that works for both Shaw and the club. At the same time, United are actively exploring options to strengthen the left side of their squad.

The club are considering additions at both left-back and left wing as they prepare for a busier schedule following their return to the Champions League.

So far, United have been linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville.
