In recent weeks, reports have emerged suggesting that Marcus Rashford could be set for a move to Bayern Munich following the conclusion of his loan spell at Barcelona.

The England international joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United last summer, with the Catalan giants holding an option to make the deal permanent.

However, after securing the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, Barcelona opted against pursuing Rashford on a full-time basis, despite the forward registering an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.

Is Marcus Rashford top choice for Bayern Munich?

Christian Falk exclusively told CFBayern Insider that while Bayern Munich did explore alternative attacking options after missing out on Gordon, Rashford is not among the club’s leading priorities.

Instead, the Bundesliga champions quickly turned their attention towards PSV Eindhoven star Ismael Saibari and are now closing in on a deal for the Moroccan international.

Falk has suggested that Rashford “remains a topic” of discussion at Bayern, the England international is not their top-choice target.

“But Fabrizio Romano’s information on the subject is, of course, true. There was some contact after Anthony Gordon said no to Bayern Munich and decided to move to Barcelona. They had to make a few calls, and they have a long list of players they like. Rashford’s name carries a certain pedigree, and he had a very good loan spell in La Liga.

“However, if the deal with Saibari works out, they’re not going to move for the Manchester United attacker. There’s also a question around the potential salary, as Bayern are currently forking out a lot of money on their wage bill – too much, in the eyes of the supervisory board. So you’re not going to make a deal with the England international if the idea is to lower the wage bill. It’s normal for Bayern to make a few calls from their shortlist, and Rashford remains a topic at the club, but he’s not the number one topic.

“I heard that Manchester United have an idea to stick with him ahead of the new season, as Michael Carrick is said to want to work with the 28-year-old. I met Carrick at the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year awards at the Landmark Hotel. I think he makes a very good impression; he’s a very straightforward kind of guy, and I think he could work with Rashford to get him back to his best.”

What does the future holds for Marcus Rashford?

Man Utd are reportedly unwilling to sanction another loan move to Barcelona, with the club favouring either a permanent transfer or reintegrating the forward into their plans for the new campaign.

Rashford’s contract is believed to contain a £40m release clause for interested clubs, although the provision reportedly does not apply to United’s fiercest domestic rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool.

With Bayern prioritising Saibari and Barcelona moving in a different direction, a return to Old Trafford is becoming an increasingly realistic possibility.

The forward is said to be prepared to honour the final two years of his contract if he remains part of Michael Carrick’s plans, potentially giving him the opportunity to revive his Manchester United career after an encouraging spell in Spain.
