Manchester United have confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford into the 2026/27 season.

The 40-year-old remains an important figure behind the scenes despite making only three senior appearances since returning to the club in 2021. A product of United’s academy, Heaton rejoined his boyhood club after spells with several teams, including Burnley and Aston Villa, bringing valuable experience and leadership to the dressing room.

Although his opportunities on the pitch have been limited, Heaton has continued to play a key role within the squad, providing support to the club’s goalkeeping group. Last season, he served as back-up alongside first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens and deputy Altay Bayindir.

Manchester United have highlighted Heaton’s influence off the pitch, with the experienced stopper widely respected for his professionalism and guidance to younger players. His new deal means he will enter a remarkable 21st season as a professional footballer.

Speaking after signing the extension, Heaton expressed his desire to continue contributing to the club and praised the determination within the squad to achieve greater success in the future.

There could still be further changes in United’s goalkeeping department this summer, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Bayindir and Andre Onana. For now, however, Heaton’s experience will remain part of the club’s plans for another year.
