Man Utd Fear Serious Ugarte Knee Injury After World Cup Stretcher Exit

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte (23) was stretchered off in tears during Uruguay’s 1-0 World Cup group-stage defeat to Spain, having twisted his knee in a collision with teammate Mathias Olivera after just 44 minutes – and journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that United fear the injury could be serious, with scans still to determine the full extent of the damage.

Uruguay’s elimination compounds the blow. Finishing third in their group with two points, La Celeste needed results elsewhere to progress as one of the best third-placed sides; Cape Verde’s draw with Saudi Arabia ended that hope, and Marcelo Bielsa’s side are heading home without a single win. For Ugarte, an already difficult tournament has ended in the worst possible circumstances.

A serious knee scare – and what the early assessment suggests

The incident itself appeared innocuous in its origins. Ugarte’s studs caught the turf as he attempted to track Pedri in the aftermath of Spain’s goal, jamming his knee, before Olivera followed through and added weight onto his outstretched leg. The midfielder went down immediately, clearly in significant distress, and was inconsolable as he was carried off on a stretcher, covering his face with his shirt.

Romano confirmed that United are now waiting to make contact with the player and assess the damage, with detailed scans required before any prognosis can be given. The concern, per multiple reports, is that the mechanism of injury – a non-contact knee torque with secondary contact – raises the possibility of anterior cruciate ligament involvement. An ACL tear would mean a minimum of eight months out, ruling Ugarte out of the entirety of United’s pre-season and a substantial portion of the 2026–27 Premier League campaign.

Prior to leaving the field, Ugarte had completed 10 of 15 passes, won all three of his ground duels, and made one interception. The numbers are secondary. He did not finish the match, and right now nobody at Old Trafford knows when he will next be fit to.

The transfer implication – Alas, the timing could hardly be worse for United’s plans

Ugarte’s future at United was already unsettled heading into this summer. Having reflected on a difficult first full season at Old Trafford, the Uruguayan was widely expected to be moved on as part of a midfield rebuild, with United planning to use his sale fee to fund incoming business. Galatasaray had been ramping up their pursuit, and interest from elsewhere had given United reasonable grounds for optimism that a deal could be structured efficiently.

Alas, a serious knee injury changes the calculus entirely. No club will commit meaningful fees for a player awaiting scan results, and if an ACL diagnosis arrives, Ugarte’s market value effectively disappears for the window. United would then face a scenario in which a midfielder they intended to sell is instead occupying a squad place and wage – and likely missing the first half of the season – while the club attempts to finance replacements without the anticipated inflow.

There had already been some suggestion United might retain Ugarte if the right offer did not materialise, but an enforced retention due to injury is a very different proposition to a considered one. The Reds’ midfield rebuild plans now hinge, in part, on a scan result.

What happens next

The immediate priority is the medical assessment. United are awaiting contact with Ugarte following Uruguay’s elimination, and the scan results – expected in the coming days – will determine the severity of the knee damage and set a projected return timeline. No official diagnosis has been issued by either Uruguay’s FA or the club.

If the injury is confirmed as minor, transfer discussions could resume with limited disruption to United’s summer window. If the worst is confirmed, the Reds’ entire midfield strategy requires reassessment. It remains to be seen whether the scan results bring relief or force a fundamental rethink of how United approach the remainder of the transfer window.
