Manchester United and Aston Villa are reportedly the most interested clubs in the services of Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries.

The 30-year-old has been plying his trade at San Siro since 2021, when he arrived as a replacement for Achraf Hakimi.

While the Dutchman isn’t as technically sound as his Moroccan counterpart, he has been praised for his ‘relentless’ displays and ability to trot up and down the right flank while offering vital contributions at both ends of the pitch.

Man Utd & Aston Villa vying for Denzel Dumfries

Man Utd’s interest in Dumfries isn’t new, as it dates back to the 2023/24 campaign, when Inter were struggling to convince the player to sign a new contract.

The Netherlands international ended up extending his deal until June 2028, but his entourage was able to insert a release clause worth €25 million (£21.8 million), thus keeping the Serie A giants on their toes.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Man Utd and Aston Villa are leading the queue for Dumfries, showing more interest in the player than any other suitor.

At this stage, it is too early to speculate on the wing-back’s future, but the source insists the Premier League remains his most likely destination if he ends up leaving Inter in the summer.

In the meantime, the Nerazzurri are already pondering their options so they don’t get caught unaware, identifying rising Cagliari star Marco Palestra (owned by Atalanta) as the best candidate to take the torch from Dumfries.

Why Dumfries shouldn’t be a priority for Man United

While signing Dumfries would have been an enticing prospect for Man Utd fans a couple of years ago, the perspective may have changed nowadays.

The former PSV Eindhoven star turned 30 this weekend, and he’s coming off an injury-plagued campaign that saw him missing 25 matches for Inter.

These physical struggles have obviously taken their toll on his performances on the pitch, as illustrated by his stats this season, which pale in comparison to the previous campaign

Moreover, the improving Diogo Dalot has outperformed Dumfries in almost every metric this season, suggesting that the Inter star wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade on the Portuguese, especially if he fails to regain his best physical condition.

It should also be noted that Man Utd are more likely to consider signing a new centre-back and left-back rather than a right-back, at least if Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui stay put.
