Manchester United are said to be harbouring ‘doubts’ over Luke Shaw’s physicality ahead of a season in which they’ll look to compete on as many fronts as possible.

As a result, the Red Devils, according to talkSPORT, will look to sign a new left-back along with their expected midfield additions in the summer window.

How Luke Shaw is faring in 2025/2026 thus far

This campaign has been something of a rarity for Shaw, as he has been available to start every single Premier League fixture and has racked up 2,538 minutes on the pitch.

The defender is notorious for being United’s most injury-prone player; since arriving at Old Trafford in 2014, he has missed an unprecedented 231 matches through fitness problems, limiting him to a total of only 317 appearances in 11 years.

With the side now fully focusing on securing their Champions League place for 2026/2027, you can understand club chiefs harbouring concerns over how much of a role Shaw will be able to play.

Who’s able to fill in for Shaw if he sustains an injury?

Patrick Dorgu is fully capable of deputising in the position when necessary. However, his most notable performances have come as a winger, and he was enjoying a sensational run of form in front of goal prior to his untimely layoff.

There are also Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui who can provide coverage, though a revamp on the left-hand side of the backline certainly wouldn’t go amiss – especially when seeing how much the additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha have completely revitalised United this term.

In the meantime, Shaw will be hoping his availability and respectable displays have caught the attention of Thomas Tuchel.

He hasn’t been called up to the England setup since the ex-Chelsea manager succeeded Gareth Southgate, so he’ll be doing everything in his power to put himself in contention for a World Cup spot in the final matches of the campaign.
