Manchester United have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers star Rayan Ait-Nouri as a potential option to bolster the left wing-back position, according to The Independent.

The Red Devils have had a poor Premier League campaign, and they are languishing 13th in the standings with only 26 points from 21 games.

Despite this, they have made some positive progress under manager Ruben Amorim and recently ousted Arsenal from the FA Cup.

The left wing-back role has been problematic, and it has been reported that Amorim wants a ‘proper’ solution for the same soon.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes was highlighted as the top target earlier this month, but the defender has decided to stay put.

The Portuguese has been convinced by manager Luis Enrique, and he will commit his future to PSG by penning a new long-term contract.

Amidst this, The Independent claim that the Red Devils have their sights on landing Ait-Nouri, who has been a consistent performer for Wolves.

Ait-Nouri can comfortably play from left-back and left wing-back. Amorim reportedly likes the flexibility in positions that the defender provides.

United may need to pay premium fee for Ait-Nouri

Diogo Dalot has been United’s regular from the left-back and left wing-back positions this term.

The Portuguese has had a mixed bag of performances. He has struggled with his defensive positioning and has failed to provide a regular attacking outlet.

Amorim tried Tyrell Malacia from the role during the festive period, but the Dutchman has looked short of pace since his return from a long-term injury lay-off.

The Feyenoord graduate has been permitted to leave on loan. With Luke Shaw’s injury record, Amorim could be eyeing a new solution during the winter transfer window.

Ait-Nouri would be a perfect candidate. The Algerian star has registered four goals and five assists from 22 appearances in all competitions for Wolves this term.

The 23-year-old has also excelled with his defensive contributions. He has won 5.6 duels and 2.4 tackles per outing with 4.7 recoveries and almost two clearances.

He has a Transfermarkt value of almost £30 million, but Wolves could easily demand £50m for his services.

The Midlands outfit are in a relegation battle and may not want to lose one of their prized assets unless they receive a premium fee before the window closes.

We don’t see a deal happening unless INEOS are willing to provide funds. With Profit and Sustainability Rules in mind, a high-profile exit could still be required.

United may have to wait until the summer to secure his signature.
