Manchester United have made initial contact over a deal to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to Sky Sports News.
United are pushing to sign a striker this summer and have turned to the Swedish marksman following their failure to secure Liam Delap’s services.
The Red Devils are exploring the terms of a potential transfer for Gyokeres, with whom manager Ruben Amorim is familiar from their time together at Sporting.
Gyokeres has been outstanding in Sporting, producing a remarkable 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 games.
He has powered the Lisbon giants to successive Primeira Liga titles and one Taca de Portugal trophy.
Gyokeres’ numbers are among the best in Europe this season. He is one of the most prolific forwards on the continent.
The Sweden international outscored every player across Europe’s top 10 leagues with 54 goals in 52 appearances.
According to Opta Analyst, Gyokeres led all players in Europe for goal- or assist-ending carries, underlining his elite ball-carrying ability.
The former Coventry City striker is no poacher, with nine goals and five assists from progressive carries. He is a self-sufficient attacking force.
At United, where creativity has often been inconsistent, that attribute could be transformational.
Inter Milan target Rasmus Hojlund recently stated that he has no intention of leaving and is prepared to fight for his place.
United remain determined to bring in another forward to deepen their attacking options.
Gyokeres is one of several players being considered for the position. However, his connection with Amorim and his exceptional all-around profile have pushed him to the top of United’s shortlist.
Some people are concerned about whether his superb form in the Portuguese league will translate to the Premier League.
But even if the former Brighton & Hove Albion star delivers only half of what he showed for Sporting, he could take the English top-flight by storm.
