In a recent post on X, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Manchester City are facing tough competition for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. It has been claimed that the Mancunian giants would have to compete with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the Italy international later this year.
The 26-year-old had a solid campaign at the Tyneside club as he was responsible for putting in a series of influential displays for them in the middle of the park. Tonali made 53 appearances for the Magpies in the previous campaign, scoring three times and earning seven assists in the process across all competitions.
The Italian talent is currently among the most consistent central midfielders in the Premier League. Hence, Man City would do well to lure him to the Etihad Stadium in this transfer window.
His current contract at St. James’ Park will expire in the summer of 2028, which could make it difficult for the Mancunian outfit to sign him on the cheap this off-season.

Tonali can get stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half.
The Italy international doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and is a good passer of the ball as well from midfield. Tonali can even contribute by scoring and creating a handful of important goals for his team. He has proven himself to be a consistent performer in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at the Mancunian club.
Tonali would inject more quality and depth into Man City’s midfield department. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Etihad Stadium next season.
At 26, Tonali has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a decent fit for the Mancunian club’s needs this summer. With all things considered, he would be well worth the fight, so Man City should think about stepping up their efforts to sign him in this transfer period.
