Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly back on the trail of one of England’s highly-rated goalkeeping talents.
The Etihad Stadium’s Academy system has remained one of the most prestigious in English football, having produced some of the Premier League’s now-most familiar stars excelling throughout competitions at various clubs.
Among the notable players to have emerged from City’s Academy system in recent years are Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho, whilst other names have significantly benefitted from coaching at the club during the tail-end of their youth development.
Liam Delap and Morgan Rogers both made later moves into Manchester City’s Academy set-up from Derby County and West Bromwich Albion respectively, now starring for Ipswich Town and Aston Villa in the Premier League.
As such, it is no surprise to see Manchester City talent spotters back on the hunt for a similar success story, this time drawing their attentions to the goalkeeping ranks – a position that is yet to quite hit the highs of other roles when it comes to starring graduates.
According to the information of journalist Alan Nixon, officials at City are once again back on the transfer trail of Sunderland’s England under-20 keeper Matty Young – currently out on loan at Salford City.
It is explained that City were previously keen on the 18-year-old prior to his breakthrough into first-team football, and have been maintaining a watchful eye on his development whilst at the aforementioned League Two club.
There is hope that City could lure the player into their Academy system too, with the report stating that Sunderland would be willing to sell Matty Young for the right price, should such an offer arrive.
Manchester City could have a closer look at Young’s talents as soon as this weekend, and at the Etihad Stadium, with the teenager travelling with his Salford City teammates to the home of the Premier League champions for the FA Cup third round.
The 18-year-old has started and completed both of Salford City’s previous Cup encounters this season, in a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury in round one, and maintaining a clean sheet in round two against Cheltenham.
Manchester City will of course have every intention of not holding back this weekend, with the cup seen by many as the club’s best chance of silverware during the remaining half of the campaign following their struggles in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
