Manchester City climbed to second in the Premier League table after beating Bournemouth 3-1 at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland scored twice for the home side, who were in control against a high-flying Cherries side. The Norwegian opened the scoring on 17 minutes, streaking clear to finish past Djordje Petrovic as City punished a high Bournemouth line.

Bournemouth briefly levelled when Tyler Adams steered in from close range, after Gianluigi Donnarumma had flapped at a corner kick.

However, Haaland ensured the parity did not last long. A dinked pass from Rayan Cherki released the Premier League’s leading scorer in behind again and Haaland rounded Petrovic confidently to score his second.

Nico O’Reilly wrapped up the win after half-time, firing low into the far corner to seal the result.

The win lifts City up to second, overtaking Bournemouth whose eight-game unbeaten run came to an end. It continues a dominant record in this fixture with City having now won 19 of the 22 meetings in all competitions.

Haaland has now scored 13 goals in just 10 league appearances this season. It’s just the third time a Premier League player has reached 13+ goals after 10 games, after Les Ferdinand (13 – 1995/96) and Haaland himself (15 – 2022/23).

Haaland happy as Man City ‘bounce back’

Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time, Haaland said it was important that City bounced back after last weekend’s defeat at Aston Villa.

“Important win. It is good to bounce back after losing a bad away game. It was nice.

“I tried to contribute for the team by doing my job. It is good to win. Now two more important games to come, so keep focusing.

“I didn’t score last game. I try to help the team to win. That is my goal and even by scoring or helping in winning duels it doesn’t matter. I want to help the team become better, that is my job.”
