For some time now, reports have suggested that Manchester City are considering bringing back their former captain Vincent Kompany to succeed Pep Guardiola once the Catalan coach eventually departs the Etihad Stadium.

According to Sport Bild, the Premier League club still see Kompany as a “top candidate” for the role, despite the fact that the Bayern coach extended his contract until 2029 last October.

However, FC Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen believes Kompany remains fully committed to a long-term future in Munich.

"We just extended Vincent’s contract, so this question doesn’t arise for us at all," Dreesen told Sport Bild.

“I’m also convinced that Vincent doesn’t do anything without thinking it through carefully and considering all possible scenarios.

”I’m 100 percent sure he asked himself this question before committing. His answer was to extend his contract, so it doesn’t matter if anyone comes calling or how many more titles we hopefully win.”

Pep Guardiola: “Manchester will be in his heart and mind”

Pep Guardiola himself recently suggested that if Kompany were to seek a new challenge in the future, a return to Manchester City could be an option.

“He’s so young, still just one or two years in Munich, so still [he] will be there," Guardiola said, according to HaytersTV (via City Xtra).

“But sooner or later, I have the feeling, just in case he decides in a certain moment to come back to England, I'm pretty sure Manchester will be in his heart and mind, and hopefully the path will cross at a certain point in his life.”

Kompany, who played for Manchester City between 2008 and 2019, was appointed Bayern head coach at the end of May 2024.

Guardiola, his former manager at City, has been in charge of the Premier League club since 2016.
