Manchester City will need roughly £57 million to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown this summer, as per a new report.
The Blues will also face competition from Arsenal and Liverpool as they look to secure his services. Brown, 22, primarily operates as a left-back, though he has played in a more advanced position on occasion.
Pep Guardiola has reinforced the left-hand side of his defence fairly recently as City signed Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves in the summer. In addition to Ait-Nouri, Nico O’Reilly and Josko Gvardiol have put in exceptional performances at left-back over the past couple of seasons.
However, it is no surprise that City are looking to strengthen this position. Gvardiol was moved into the centre of defence in the second half of the 2024-25 season – which looks to be his primary position in the long run – and O’Reilly has been employed in his slightly more natural central midfield role in recent weeks.
Brown’s rise to prominence has been rapid. In the 2022-23 campaign, the defender was playing for 1. FC Nürnberg’s second team in the Regionalliga, Germany’s fourth tier. However, it was during this season that he began to break into first-team contention – and he has since progressed rapidly.
After a good start to the following season, Brown earned his move to the Bundesliga as Frankfurt signed the left-back – but allowed him to remain with Nurnberg for the rest of the season. He made 43 appearances in total for Nürnberg, scoring one goal and providing seven assists in all competitions.
The recent season saw the German begin to establish himself in Frankfurt’s first-team. Although he only played 1,900 minutes in the Bundesliga, Brown was one of Frankfurt’s best players, scoring three goals and providing a very impressive six assists.
In fact, only Hugo Ekitike and Omar Marmoush, who moved to Manchester himself in January 2025, provided more goals and assists in Germany’s top flight than Brown as Frankfurt recorded their highest Bundesliga finish in a very long time.
Whilst the Eagles have lost their two talismans over the last 12 months and regressed somewhat as a collective, Brown has kept improving. He has been a mainstay in Frankfurt’s team this season and has already matched his goal and assist output from last campaign.
Additionally, Brown made his debut for Germany’s senior side during the October international break and is firmly in the race to start for his country at the upcoming World Cup.
This excellent progress would explain why a host of big European clubs are interested in signing Brown in the summer, as reported by BILD and relayed by Sport Witness.
It is reported that Manchester City and Barcelona send scouts to watch Brown regularly, whilst Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid also hold an interest in the left-back.
The report states that it is ‘highly likely’ that Brown will leave Deutsche Bank Park in the summer due to a combination of the club not being able to resist the €65 million windfall they could receive for selling him and the player not being able to resist the allure of some of the biggest teams in football.
BILD report that ‘top clubs have made contact’ over a deal for Brown but that the race for his signature is currently “completely open”.
The FIFA World Cup could have a massive role to play in Brown’s future. If he is selected and plays well for Germany, that would only serve to increase his price tag and the interest that the aforementioned clubs hold in him. But a poor tournament may also see these teams cool their interest.
