In an official statement on social media, Lorient left-back Benjamin Mendy (30) has confirmed that an employment tribunal over unpaid wages from Manchester City has ruled in favour of him. The Athletic reports that the Premier League champions will now have to pay the Frenchman the majority of the £11m in unpaid wages and bonuses he claims is owed to him.
The claim dates back to the 30-year-old being charged with multiple rape allegations and one count of sexual assault in January 2021. The defender claimed that City had judged that ‘he was guilty from the start’ of investigations during the tribunal. Mendy was cleared of all charges against him in January 2023. During the two years from being charged to the conclusion of the trial, the Manchester club refused to pay the former France international’s wages, despite him being contracted at the Etihad Stadium until June 2023. The World Cup winner later signed for Lorient.
Mendy’s official statement reads, “Having had to wait three years for my wages, I am delighted with the decision and hope the club will do the honourable thing and pay the outstanding amounts.” The former City defender went on to thank his agent, legal team and family.
