Manchester City take firm loan stance on James Trafford ahead of summer transfer

  • Man City officials are prepared to sanction a loan exit for James Trafford this summer.
  • City internally value Trafford “far in excess” of £40 million, effectively pricing out most.
  • Any prospective loan suitor must be prepared to cover 100% of the England international’s wages.

Officials at Manchester City will permit James Trafford a loan exit from the club, should he be intent on leaving the Etihad Stadium in the summer transfer window.

Trafford’s rise has been one of the standout stories of the City Football Academy in recent years, particularly after a record-breaking spell with Burnley, where he kept 29 clean sheets in a single season before returning to the Etihad Stadium as deputy to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Despite his secondary status, Trafford has proven his credentials throughout the season, but perhaps most notably with a penalty save against Mohamed Salah to secure Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool and place at Wembley.

At 23, Trafford has openly aired his frustrations regarding a lack of Premier League minutes, and while he has been the hero of City’s Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal and their run to an eighth consecutive FA Cup semi-final, he is reportedly reaching a crossroads.

With Donnarumma firmly established as Pep Guardiola’s No.1 for the foreseeable future, Trafford’s desire for weekly top-flight football has forced the club’s hierarchy into a strategic decision ahead of the summer market.

Manchester City’s James Trafford stance

Now, according to a new report, Manchester City will allow James Trafford to leave on loan next season should he insist on not staying at the Etihad Stadium as back-up to Gianluigi Donnarumma for another campaign.

It is suggested that those within City do not expect any club to meet their current valuation of Trafford, which is believed to be ‘far in excess’ of the reported £40 million fee mentioned in various quarters.

Who will cover Trafford’s wages?

Furthermore, in the event of any loan exit for Trafford, the report states that any interested club will also have to match 100 per cent of the England international’s Manchester City salary.

The financial hurdles involved in any potential deal are significant, and with City valuing Trafford highly, a permanent move to reported admirers such as Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur appears unlikely.

This has opened the door for a high-profile loan move, though the 100 per cent salary coverage requirement serves as a deterrent for many Championship or perhaps mid-table Premier League clubs.

As Manchester City now prepare for a season-defining week – starting with Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge and spreading across to the April 19 ‘title decider’ against Arsenal – the focus remains on the pitch.

Yet, behind the scenes, Director of Football Hugo Viana is already assessing replacements, with Manchester City reportedly exploring a reunion with Northern Ireland international Pierce Charles should Trafford’s loan departure be finalised in the summer.
