Manchester City are attempting to lure 16-year-old midfielder Mishel Nduka away from Arsenal following the expiration of the youngster’s contract, as per a new report.
Nduka has been part of Arsenal‘s youth setup and his contract with the north London club came to an end this week, leaving him free to discuss terms with interested parties and opening the door to a significant recruitment battle among some of English football’s most prominent clubs.
Manchester City‘s interest in Nduka reflects the growing importance of academy and under-age recruitment within director of football Hugo Viana‘s broader strategy at the Etihad Stadium, with the club having demonstrated a willingness to compete at the highest level for the country’s most promising young talent regardless of their current club affiliation.
Manchester City academy talent makes permanent move to Cardiff City
The timing of City’s move is understood to be directly connected to the potential for further midfield exits this summer, with a number of personnel decisions still to be resolved within the squad as new manager Enzo Maresca continues to shape the group he will work with in the 2026-27 campaign.
The move also underlines that City’s recruitment activity this summer extends well beyond the first-team market, with Viana’s operation running parallel processes at multiple levels of the squad simultaneously even as the pursuit of senior additions in areas such as the right-back position and central midfield continues to dominate the broader transfer narrative.
According to The Secret Scout on X, Manchester City are aiming to tempt Nduka away from Arsenal following the expiration of his contract, with the club viewing the 16-year-old as the “perfect replacement” should two midfielders depart the Etihad Stadium before the window closes.
Arsenal, however, have not stood still in the face of City’s interest, responding by offering Nduka improved contract terms in a bid to convince the teenager to remain at the club where he has developed through the youth ranks, rather than making the switch to the Etihad Stadium at this stage of his career.
Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool are all said to be aware of Nduka’s situation, though the report indicates that each of those clubs is currently focused on other targets and is not actively pursuing the teenager at this stage – leaving City and Arsenal as the primary parties in what has become a straight two-horse battle for the youngster’s signature.
That dynamic gives City a degree of clarity in their pursuit while simultaneously increasing the pressure on Arsenal to present terms compelling enough to persuade Nduka to extend his commitment to a club that has invested considerable time and resource in his development.
Four changes confirmed to Manchester City coaching structure
City’s track record in identifying and securing promising young talent ahead of rival clubs is well established, with the club’s academy pipeline having produced a consistent stream of players capable of either contributing at first-team level or generating significant transfer fees in the market.
Arsenal’s counter-offer of improved terms reflects the strength of their own belief in Nduka’s potential and the genuine concern within their coaching staff at the prospect of losing a player they have developed from a young age to a domestic rival – a scenario that would be felt as a particularly pointed blow given the source of the interest.
Whether City can ultimately convince Nduka to choose the Etihad Stadium over staying in the English capital will depend as much on the personal ambitions of the teenager and his family as on the financial and footballing terms being placed in front of him.
