Manchester City have been told to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc -Andre ter Stegen this summer as the German faces an uncertain future in Spain, as per a new report.
The 33-year-old has been one of the best shotstoppers in world football since he moved to Camp Nou in 2014, winning a historic treble under now PSG manager Luis Enrique in his first season at Barcelona.
Ter Stegen has three years remaining on his current deal at Barcelona but with the Blaugrana expected to secure the arrival of Joan Garcia, it remains to be seen where ter Stegen would rank in Hansi Flick’s pecking order next season.
Wojciech Szczęsny made 30 appearances in all competitions last season and is expected to receive a contract extension, with the 35-year-old’s current contract expiring soon. Goalkeeper is also a position that could witness upheaval at the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Ederson wanted to move to Saudi Arabia last summer but with no suitor club able to match Manchester City’s asking price for the Brazil international – understood to be around £50 million – a transfer failed to materialise.
Like Ederson, Stefan Ortega Moreno is also entering the final 12 months of his current deal and whilst on international duty in March, the German refused to rule out a possible exit from the Etihad Stadium this summer.
However, Pep Guardiola has maintained that he expects Ederson and Ortega Moreno to stay put into the new season amidst a major squad revamp at Manchester City, led by newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana.
It remains to be seen what the coming months could mean for Manchester City and their goalkeeping department, which has also witnessed the addition of Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea after Scott Carson was released as he approached the end of his contract.
With Marc-Andre ter Stegen facing an uncertain future in Spain, German football legend Lothar Matthaus has tipped Manchester City to plot a move for the 33-year-old ahead of the new season.
“I don’t know what Manchester City are planning, but I don’t think they are very happy with Ederson,” Matthaus told Sky Germany, as quoted by Barca Universal.
“I think ter Stegen could definitely be a goalkeeper for the Cityzens for the next three or four years.”
It is worth noting that Manchester City could look to cash in on Ederson or Ortega Moreno should a suitable offer for either goalkeeper present itself this summer, to avoid the risk of losing both on a free transfer next year.
