Manchester City dispensed with Manchester United on Sunday as they picked up a 3-nil win at the Etihad over their arch-rivals. It wasn’t a typical performance from a Pep Guardiola side, but it was exactly what City needed to beat Ruben Amorim’s side. There were plenty of positives and areas for City to improve to come out of yesterday’s match. One of the biggest positives from the game was the performance of Erling Haaland. Haaland scored a second-half brace to settle yesterday’s match. Manchester City unleashed its most dangerous weapons in the final third yesterday.
Erling Haaland’s overall performance was superb in a dominant display from City’s number-nine. He was all over the pitch as he helped inspire his team to a crucial derby win.
How the second half of Manchester City’s win over Manchester United unfolded was perfect for Erling Haaland. Ruben Amorim’s side had to chase the game as they were 1-nil down as the second half began. While they had plenty of possession, they did leave space behind their defence. That space is precisely what Haaland craves as a striker. He and his teammates made full use of that space and Manchester United’s naivety to put them away. Haaland was the primary beneficiary of this. His second-half brace allowed him to show off his elite finishing, and he has now scored five goals in four Premier League matches to open this season. Haaland is once again off to a fast start to a new season.
Outside of his goals, the overall performance from Erling Haaland was superb on Sunday. He led from the front for his team. He helped lead Manchester City’s high press, and when Haaland does that, his entire team follows him. The Norwegian international also helped his team defensively when required. He made four powerful defensive headers at the beginning of the second half. He was always willing to do his job defensively when Manchester United had corners or free kicks from promising positions.
Erling Haaland’s overall performance in the Manchester derby wasn’t lost on his teammates. Speaking after Manchester City’s win, Phil Foden praised Haaland for how he played. Speaking on Haaland’s performance, Foden said: “It was a complete performance. The way he held up the ball, he did everything today, defending, attacking, running in behind, doing all the dirty work, pressing for the team. It was a full shift from him.”
The way the second half unfolded in Manchester City’s win over Manchester United on Sunday allowed City to unleash Erling Haaland. He bagged a brace and he took full advantage of the space he was given. Outside of that, Haaland’s overall performance was superb and he seems determined to lead his team from the front this season.
