Ever since Pep Guardiola took over as Manchester City manager, his team has taken every competition they enter seriously. During Pep Guardiola’s reign as manager, City has won six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League. They have also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023 and the European Super Cup. Outside of the trophies won, Pep Guardiola’s side in the FA Cup has always put themselves at the business end of the competition. They have made seven consecutive semi-finals in the competition. City face Liverpool today in the quarter-final stage of this season’s FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium. If Manchester City can beat Liverpool, they will create history as they would become the first team to make eight consecutive FA Cup semi-finals.

Pep Guardiola knows that making seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals is no simple feat.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the consistency of his side when speaking yesterday ahead of today’s FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool. He made a point of explaining just how strong his team has been over the years. He told the media yesterday: “Since we won the first Premier League we have now won six Premier Leagues now and won five [League Cups], seven semi-finals in the FA Cup and four finals. That defines the club, the consistency.

In cups, all the time you can have a bad afternoon. You are not always playing League One, League Two or Premier League teams, you can have a bad afternoon but it didn’t happen. Always we were there.

That’s what makes me proud the most. You can win a title and make a good season. Seven semi-finals in a row and to fight for an eighth in the FA Cup is really, really good.

Manchester City can create history if they beat Liverpool today.

There is an opportunity for Manchester City to stand alone in FA Cup history if they can beat Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon. No team has made eight consecutive FA Cup semi-finals. Only Manchester City and the Clapham Rovers side of 1873 to 1881 have made seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals. That statistic alone speaks to how tough a task it is to make seven consecutive FA Cup semi-finals. Making eight consecutive FA Cup semi-finals would put Pep Guardiola’s side in a class of their own.

However, to create history, City must beat a Liverpool side that will be desperate to keep their hopes of claiming silverware this season alive. Arne Slot’s side have had a disappointing season after winning the Premier League title last season. After spending big in last summer’s transfer window, Liverpool have well and truly fallen off their perch. Also, they will be eager to send Mo Salah off in style given that this will be his final season at the club.

Manchester City will be looking to create history today against Liverpool in today’s FA Cup quarter-final clash at the Etihad. If Pep Guardiola’s side wins today’s they’ll make eight consecutive FA Cup semi-finals. That is the chance that is on offer for City today and they’ll have to beat a determined Liverpool side to stand alone in FA Cup history.
