Manchester City were more threatening in the first half with Jill Roord’s effort kept out by the boot of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who later got down to stop a Lily Murphy strike from the corner of the box.

Catarina Macario put a diving header over the bar for Chelsea and Lauren James’ ball across the six-yard box failed to find a teammate.

Ayaka Yamashita got behind a 25-yard James effort early in the second half, but it was City who made the breakthrough on the hour mark.

Half-time substitute Miedema volleyed in at the far post, after Hampton tipped Laia Aleixandri’s header onto the bar from Mary Fowler’s cross.

Mayra Ramirez’s last action in the game before being substituted was to put the ball in the back of the net but be given offside.

With ten minutes left, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd hit the City bar and Maika Hamano shot on the rebound was saved by Yamashita, who also pushed a Wieke Kaptein shot away from danger.

Man City doubled their lead with two minutes left of the 90, Miedema again with the finish having been picked out by Kerolin.

The second leg is at Stamford Bridge on Thursday 27 March at 8pm.

Barcelona already have one foot in the semi-finals following a 4-1 away leg win over Bayern Munich, where the only goal of the first half was from Bayern’s Caitlin Dijkstra, into her own net

Irene Paredes netted from a Mapi León corner five minutes into the second half, then soon afterwards Salma Paralluelo scored following a quick break to give Barca a 3-0 lead.

Janina Minge pulled a goal back with a header from Lynn Wilms’ corner, only for Sydney Schertenleib to make it 4-1 with a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner.
