Manchester City travel to Tyneside this evening while they seek to reclaim the League Cup for the first time since 2021.
Pep Guardiola’s side moves into a crucial stage of the season. Impressively, they remain unbeaten in 12 matches across all competitions. Recently, this dominance was highlighted by a massive 10-1 victory over Exeter City. However, the Citizens must overcome a significant defensive injury crisis. Now, they face the holders at a ground where they suffered a 2-1 league defeat earlier this season.
Currently, Pep Guardiola manages half a dozen senior absentees. Specifically, Josko Gvardiol is out for several months with a tibial fracture. Meanwhile, Ruben Dias is sidelined until late February with a hamstring issue. Additionally, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic, Savinho, and Oscar Bobb remain unavailable. Notably, Rayan Ait-Nouri returned from AFCON. However, he is unlikely to feature following a missed travel connection and limited recovery time.
Consequently, rotation appears inevitable. Likely, James Trafford retains his place as the designated cup goalkeeper. Defensively, youngsters Abdukodir Khusanov and Max Alleyne could form an experimental partnership. Alongside them, Nico O’Reilly expects to start at left-back. In midfield, Rodri will anchor the side. Finally, Phil Foden, Rayane Cherki, and Jeremy Doku will support star striker Erling Haaland.
Manchester City predicted XI: Trafford; Nunes, Khusanov, Alleyne, O’Reilly; Gonzalez; Cherki, Foden, Reijnders, Doku; Haaland
The League Cup semi-final first leg takes place at St James’ Park on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 GMT.
The match will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports.
