Ruben Amorim achieved back-to-back wins at Old Trafford in the Premier League for the very first time since taking charge of Manchester United as his side defeated Chelsea 2-1.
Both sides were reduced to 10-men in the first half as Bruno Fernandes scored his 100th goal for United in all competitions, before Casemiro doubled the home side’s lead.
Trevoh Chalobah scored late on for Chelsea, who suffered their first loss in the Premier League this season.
After a disappointing defeat in the Manchester derby, United sought to make a quick start in order to restore belief into the Old Trafford faithful.
The Red Devils were almost up and running inside three minutes when Patrick Dorgu’s inviting cross travelled across the box to Bryan Mbeumo, but his header towards goal was pushed away on the line by Robert Sánchez.
Sánchez was in the thick of the action again a minute later, this time though for all the wrong reasons, as he was sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. A launch upfield from Altay Bayindir was flicked on brilliantly by Benjamin Šeško into the path of Mbeumo. With the Cameroon international running in on goal, Sánchez came rushing out but recklessly caught the United forward just outside the 18-yard box.
Amorim’s side quickly took advantage of the extra player, taking the lead in the 14th minute. Noussair Mazraoui clipped a ball into the box which was headed towards goal by Dorgu. On his 200th appearance for the club, Bruno Fernandes managed to stay onside and latched onto the ball to direct it past substitute goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen.
Chelsea were struggling to find their feet and not just because of the unrelenting rain. With the pressure increasing on his side, Enzo Maresca made the decision to bring off Cole Palmer just 20 minutes into the match.
His changes proved ineffective, however, as United doubled their lead in the 37th minute. After a short corner eventually worked its way into the box, Dorgu again headed the ball into a dangerous area. Reece James intervened but his clearance looped up in the air causing more trouble for Chelsea’s defence. It landed on the head of Maguire and into the direction of Casemiro, who crashed home a header from close range.
Casemiro had put his side in cruise control but handed Chelsea a lifeline just before half-time. The Brazilian midfielder received a second yellow card after he needlessly dragged Andrey Santos to the ground, and was subsequently sent off for the fourth time in his Manchester United career.
Chances were few and far between in the second half as conditions continued to worsen. Chelsea thought they had halved the deficit in the 63rd minute but they were denied by the linesman. Reece James’ corner was flicked on at the front post by Tosin Adarabioyo and flashed in by Wesley Fofana, but the French defender was clearly stood in an offside position.
The Blues did manage to get one back in the 80th minute courtesy of Trevoh Chalobah. The defender met Reece James’ cross and powered a header past Bayindir into the bottom corner.
It proved to be just a consolation and United held on for all three points. The Red Devils are now unbeaten in 13 Premier League home games against Chelsea.
Enzo Maresca’s side now find themselves seven points off league leaders Liverpool, whilst United are up to ninth in the table.
