Manchester United are reportedly back in the hunt for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
It had appeared that Tottenham Hotspur were going to pip Man United to the services of the Portuguese, but things could change.
The Red Devils have reached out to Fernandes and his representatives in recent hours and are now willing to improve the personal terms they initially offered.
Man United also plan to hold direct talks with West Ham, and while Spurs remain in the race, the Red Devils are willing to pull out all the stops to get their man.
It is an interesting development and the injury to Manuel Ugarte could have forced the Red Devils into changing their mind on Fernandes.
The Uruguay international had to be stretchered off against Spain in a World Cup match in the early hours of today and could spend up to 12 months on the sidelines.
It has thrown a spanner in the works for Man United as they had plans to sell him this summer and sign a replacement.
Fernandes remains a top target and the Old Trafford club have become more desperate in their pursuit of the Hammers midfielder from the look of things.
However, whether they are now willing to pay around £80 million for the 21-year-old remains to be seen having initially baulked at West Ham’s valuation.
It is believed Fernandes would prefer to join Man United ahead of Spurs, and the onus is now on the Red Devils to break the bank for him.
