Portuguese is closing in on a historic landmark after a fine campaign

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has tipped Bruno Fernandes to be crowned Premier League Player of the Year as he closes in on a historic landmark.

Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig last summer but has struggled to bed in, managing just ten goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.

He has started to find his feet of late, though, with eight of those goals coming in 14 matches since the turn of the year.

The Slovenia international puts that resurgence down to club captain Fernandes’ leadership, revealing the creative midfielder has offered him a helping hand in recent weeks.

Sesko told Sky Sports: “I'm also getting a lot of instructions from Bruno (Fernandes). Every single training, after training, sometimes before training.

“Whatever he tells you, just do it, don't think twice. And that's what I said. I'm really grateful to have this opportunity to be around him.”

Fernandes is on track for a historic campaign as he closes in on the record for the most Premier League assists in one season. He is just two shy of the current record of 20, held jointly by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20).

Regardless of whether he hits that milestone, though, Sesko thinks he is more than deserving of the Player of the Year honour.

“He's great. He's my team-mate. And of course, always stand up [for my team-mates], yeah, he should win it.”

The Premier League usually announce the player and manager of the year in mid-May, and Fernandes will face stiff competition. Erling Haaland has enjoyed another superb campaign, as has Bernardo Silva, while Arsenal stars Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are also expected to be in the conversation.
