Manchester United are confident that the club will be able to invest in ‘top transfers’ this summer.

Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe sparked fears over the club’s financial predicament earlier this month after revealing the extent of the situation.

“If you think about Manchester United as a business, it’s gone off the rails. It’s gone off the rails a long way, really,” Ratcliffe said to The Times.

“If you look at the numbers, the numbers were fairly scary, really. Because they’d sort of lost control, I think, of where the ship was headed. And the costs had got out of control.

“If you think of it in really simple terms, you’ve got the operating costs, which are all the staff and the fixed costs of running the business. And then you’ve got all the squad costs, player salaries and player purchases.

“In super-simple terms, the club has been spending more money than it’s been earning now for the last seven years, and it ends in a very difficult place.

“And for Manchester United, that place ended at the end of this year, the end of 2025, with the club running out of cash.”

Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League table and face the prospect of another season without Champions League football – unless the club win the Europa League this season.

Despite that situation, the club are understood to be ‘confident’ of investing in top talent this summer. According to Sky Sports, the budget is set to be increased by the planned departures of Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen as free agents, while suitors will be sought for the high-earning Casemiro.

Marcus Rashford and Antony could also be sold after increasing their value on loan at Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively. Villa have a £40m option to sign the former.

Elsewhere, Kobbie Mainoo is another player for who a transfer is being considered. The midfielder has stalled on signing a new deal at Old Trafford and is attracting interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid. Valued in excess of £60m, his and Rashford’s sales would count as complete profit in Premier League PSR calculations.
