Manchester United defender Newell joins Blackburn Rovers on loan | OneFootball

Manchester United defender Lucy Newell has joined Barclays Women’s Championship club Blackburn Rovers on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

The 18-year-old is a product of the Manchester United academy system and she signed her first professional terms with the club in October. Newell is yet to make her senior debut for Manchester United, however, she has been involved in the first team squad for a handful of matches.

Newell started out in the youth ranks at FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division club West Bromwich Albion. The player was dual-registered with Manchester United last season whilst gaining vital first team playing experience in the third tier with West Bromwich Albion. Newell joined Manchester United on a permanent basis last summer.

The defender will now gain further exposure to the senior game in her loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. Newell will get the opportunity to play in the Barclays Women’s Championship for the first time between now and the end of the season.

Newell is the second young player to join Blackburn Rovers in the current transfer window. Everton youngster Macy Settle has also joined the Lancashire club on loan.
