Manchester United appear to have serious interest in both Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer transfer window.

A midfield overhaul looks set to be on the agenda at Old Trafford at the end of the current season regardless of who ends up being appointed as the club’s next full-time manager, with interim boss Michael Carrick strengthening his case as the frontrunner for that role.

United retooled their attack last summer by replacing the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, also getting their new long-term No1 goalkeeper in Senne Lammens.

Midfield is expected to be the major focus this summer, with Casemiro having recently reaffirmed his decision - mutually announced in January - to leave the club on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract, despite United possessing the option to trigger an automatic one-year extension.

Though Kobbie Mainoo has now reverted back to being a key player under Carrick after a frustrating period during the reign of predecessor Ruben Amorim, doubts also surround the future of Manuel Ugarte, while the long-term plans of influential captain Bruno Fernandes remain unclear after he was subject to big-money offers from Saudi Arabia last year.

Mainoo looks set to sign a new contract, along with centre-back Harry Maguire, while rumours continue over bumper fresh terms on offer for Fernandes.

United have been heavily linked with the likes of Anderson, Tonali, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Bruno Guimaraes, among others, as part of their midfield restructure that it is thought will include two arrivals, with a new left-back also said to be sought to succeed Luke Shaw long-term amid reports around Myles Lewis-Skelly, Lewis Hall and Nathaniel Brown.

The Sun now claim that United want to make Nottingham Forest star Anderson their marquee summer signing around which to base the rest of their summer transfer business, seeing him as an ideal fit.

However, they are believed to face serious competition for the England international’s signature from rivals Manchester City, who are still leading the race.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Anderson is on United’s transfer shortlist for the summer, but that City have serious interest and are ahead in the battle for his signing as things stand.

Romano adds that Tonali is also “very high” on that same shortlist at Old Trafford and would be open to the move.

There have been conflicting reports of late over whether the Italian has a “gentleman’s agreement” to leave Newcastle this summer if the club, who currently sit 12th in the Premier League table and six points adrift of the top six with seven matches remaining, do not qualify for any European competition for next term, while Magpies manager Eddie Howe has already hit out at claims from earlier this month that skipper Guimaraes had held “advanced talks” with Manchester United.

Over the weekend, speculation over Manchester City potentially swooping for both Anderson and Tonali put their combined transfer fees at around the £190million mark - a figure comprised of £90m for Anderson and £100m for Tonali, who has also been linked with Arsenal.
