Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has confirmed that the club are in contract talks with both Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.
Maguire’s current deal runs out in the summer and he is one of the Red Devils’ biggest earners.
Mainoo is contracted to the club until 2027, with the option for a further year. The midfielder’s future at Old Trafford was uncertain after falling out of favour with previous manager Ruben Amorim, but he has featured prominent under interim head coach Carrick.
Sky Sports News report that negotiations with each player are at an “advanced stage”, although there is no “verbal agreement yet” on terms and more talks will be held. It is hoped that both deals are signed in April.
Mainoo is set for a “significant pay rise” and his new contract will run until 2031, while Maguire’s new salary has not yet been determined. They are said to be discussing a one-year extension with the option for another year for the centre-back.
Both Maguire and Mainoo were both called up to the England squad for the first time in 18 months by national team manager Thomas Tuchel, ahead of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Speaking after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at Dean Court, Carrick said: “Contract negotiations with players are always ongoing, so you hope whatever it is gets done in the right way.
“Both have been great, and being back in the England squad is what they deserve. I’m not getting involved on how close things are, but they’ve both done great.”
