Manchester United have completed the signing of 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur, with a deal worth £4million guaranteed plus a further £4million in add-ons – a total package of up to £8million – now confirmed.

The deal was confirmed by The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, who reports that Spurs also retain sell-on and matching rights on the teenager. The add-ons are structured depending on the winger’s senior progress.

Thompson’s Profile and What He Brings

Thompson came through Tottenham’s academy on the left side of attack and is set to join Michael Carrick’s first-team squad directly. He is set up as a winger.

The numbers back the hype: Thompson produced 13 goals and six assists across Spurs’ under-18s to under-21s last season, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. He was named on the bench for senior Champions League matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as the Carabao Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers – yet never made a competitive senior appearance for Spurs.

Whitwell draws a direct parallel to Ayden Heaven’s arrival in January 2025 – the centre-back joined from Arsenal’s academy at 18 for £1.5million and has since accumulated 24 senior appearances. Thompson slots into the same mould: a highly-rated English teenager extracted from a rival club’s development system before reaching senior market value.

The Reds are not stopping there. Whitwell reports that United are in talks to sign other teenage talents, including players currently at Manchester City and Liverpool.

The sell-on and matching rights Spurs have retained are worth noting. Tottenham will be watching Thompson’s development closely.
